Performer Biography

Dmitry Yablonsky, the conductor on this recording, made his orchestral debut as a cellist at age nine, playing Haydn's Cello Concerto in C Major.

Compositional Technique

Khachaturian's passion for the dissonant interval of the second, both major and minor, comes from Caucasian folk instruments like the tar (plucked lute), kamanchah (spike fiddle), and tambourine.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Khachaturian believed that a composer's personality and aura are the most important things, and that his music was recognizable from the first two bars.

Oxana Yablonskaya, the pianist on this recording, won First Prize in three international competitions: the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud, Rio de Janeiro, and Vienna Beethoven Competitions.

Aram Khachaturian, an Eastern Armenian, was born in Tbilisi, Georgia, and came to music relatively late, at the age of nineteen.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Khachaturian's musical language was evolved from ethnic models, taking as his creed the words of Armenian pioneer Spendarian to 'study the music of your own people and drink in the sound of life'.
