Performer Biography

Sharon Bezaly, the flautist on this recording, plays a 24-carat gold flute specially built for her by Muramatsu.

Instruments

For the Rautavaara concerto, Sharon Bezaly uses a variety of flutes, including a wooden piccolo, a Muramatsu 24-carat gold flute, a Muramatsu platinum-plated silver alto flute, and a Kotato & Fukushima silver bass flute.

Composition History

The two concertos on this album represent two different approaches for flautists seeking 20th or 21st-century concertos: commissioning a new work or arranging an existing one.

Recording & Production

The São Paulo Symphony Orchestra (OSESP) recording of the Khachaturian concerto was made in February 2010 at the Sala São Paulo, Brazil, using Neumann microphones and high-resolution A/D converters.

Composer Biography

Aram Khachaturian, born in Tbilisi to Armenian parents, became the first Armenian composer of international importance, despite spending most of his life in Moscow.

Composition History

Khachaturian's Flute Concerto is an arrangement of his Violin Concerto, made by the French flautist Jean-Pierre Rampal in 1968, with the composer's permission.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Khachaturian's sumptuous orchestration combines European tradition with an Oriental sound world, incorporating percussion instruments from folk music.
