Composer's Artistic Vision

A year spent in Paris was highly significant for Klami's development, where he was influenced by contemporary French music (Ravel, Honegger), Spanish composer Manuel de Falla, and Russian composers Stravinsky and Prokofiev.

Uuno Klami was awarded the honorary title of Academician in 1959, and Jean Sibelius, the renowned Finnish composer, wrote a reference for his state artist's grant in 1939.

Performer Biography

Esa Ylönen, the pianist and leader of the Uuno Klami Ensemble, is also the Chairman of the Uuno Klami Society and has edited collections of Klami's piano and chamber works.

Klami's Piano Quartet in D Major was highly praised by Leevi Madetoja in Helsingin Sanomat, who called it "one of the most promising student works composed here" and noted its mature construction and content.

Despite his musical talent, Uuno Klami was reportedly sent to chop wood during singing lessons at school, and his student record at the Helsinki Music Institute noted 'Ej sjungit' (Did not sing).

Composition History

Uuno Klami's Sonata in C Minor for Violin and Piano was left unfinished, with its finale later reconstructed by composer Eero Kesti based on sketches and a similar Viola Sonata.
