Composition History
Lachner's Symphony No. 5, the Sinfonia passionata, was the winner of a highly publicized competition in Vienna in 1835, offering 50 ducats in gold for the best new symphony.
Critical Reception
Lachner's Sinfonia passionata sparked a major press feud in the German-speaking world, with critics north of the Main River tending to reject it and those south of the Main tending to praise it.
