Lachner's Concertino for Bassoon and Orchestra was dedicated to Theobald Hürth, the principal bassoonist of the Vienna Court Opera, but it remained unpublished during the composer's lifetime.

Robert Schumann, a prominent composer and critic, initially criticized Franz Lachner's Fifth Symphony but later praised his Sixth Symphony as a "capital work" and placed Lachner near Franz Schubert.
