Performer Biography
Luigi Alberto Bianchi, the violinist on this album, had his precious 1595 Amati viola stolen in 1980, which led him to return to playing the violin.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Lalo sought to renew French music, drawing inspiration from German Romanticism and instrumental music, and greatly admired Austro-German composers like Beethoven and Mendelssohn.
Notable Performances
The premiere of Lalo's Sonata in D major, Op. 12, featured two exceptional performers: violinist Pablo de Sarasate and pianist Georges Bizet.
Composition History
The Sonata in D major, Op. 12, was originally published in 1853 as a "Grand Duo Concertant" but went unnoticed until Lalo revised it into a sonata for the Société Nationale de Musique.

Édouard Lalo, born in French Flanders to a Spanish family, ran away from home at 17 to pursue music in Paris, against his father's wishes.
Instruments
Luigi Alberto Bianchi currently plays a violin built in 1620 by Giovanni Paolo Maggini from the Brescia school, which was once owned by the Princes of Saxonia.
Composition History
Lalo's early chamber works, composed between 1848 and 1870, met with little success, leading him to abandon the genre for about twenty years.
