Johann Georg Reutter was ennobled in 1740 in recognition of his tireless service and positive relationship with the Imperial Court.

Critical Reception

Despite some negative critical assessments, Johann Georg Reutter is considered one of Austria's most productive composers, with his sacred works receiving particular acclaim during his lifetime.

Instruments

The hammered dulcimer (salterio) was very popular at the Viennese Imperial Court until 1763, despite being expensive to maintain and technically one of the most difficult instruments to master.

Historical Context

During the reign of Emperor Charles VI (1711-1740), music at the Imperial Court in Vienna reached its peak, with the court's musical establishment growing to over 70 members.

Composer Biography

Johann Georg Reutter (the Younger) received his composition training exclusively from Antonio Caldara, the deputy Kapellmeister under Johann Joseph Fux at the Viennese Imperial Court.

Composition History

Reutter's oratorio La Divina Provvidenza in Ismaele was one of his few works that gained attention beyond the Habsburg Empire and was admired by later generations.
