Lecuona, despite being a virtuoso pianist, never touched the piano while composing, instead jotting down notes in various locations and sending music to publishers without hearing it, trusting his internal sense of sound.

Composition History
Lecuona's first composition, "Cuba and America," written in 1907 when he was eleven, was so difficult to sell that he went door-to-door to try and find a buyer.

Lecuona gave his first recital at the age of five and graduated from the Conservatorio Nacional Hubert de Blanck with a gold medal in performance.
