Locatelli left his hometown of Bergamo at sixteen for Rome, possibly hoping to train under Corelli, but the illustrious master was already ill and died the following year.
Composition History
Locatelli's Opus 4, published in 1735, consists of two distinct sets of pieces: six Introduttioni Teatrali and six Concerti.
Compositional Technique
The Introduttioni Teatrali in Opus 4 adopt the three-movement form of the Neapolitan opera overture (fast-slow-fast) but use the instrumentation of a concerto grosso.

Locatelli's Opus 3, L'Arte del Violino, is considered his spiritual testament, elevating violin writing to new heights of virtuosity and making him a direct precursor to Paganini.
