Recording & Production
The works 'Meld' and 'Lucifer' were commissioned with funds from Thames Valley University, while 'Gold' was jointly commissioned by Thames Valley University and the Huddersfield Festival of Contemporary Music.
Composition History
The project was initiated by pianist Philip Mead, who grew up in the brass band tradition and found the combination of piano and brass natural, despite a surprisingly small existing repertoire.
Performer Biography
Philip Mead, the pianist on this recording, is the founder and Artistic Director of the British Contemporary Piano Competition, held every three years since 1988.

The commissions for this album resulted in works that are very different yet consistently high quality, vindicating the project's original belief.

This album is the result of a six-year project investigating the possibilities of combining various types of brass groups with solo piano.
Performer Biography
James Gourlay, the conductor, is a tuba player who was formerly a member of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble and has toured worldwide as a soloist.
