Performer Biography

Tenor Jan Kobow, a soloist on this album, won first prize at the Leipzig Bach Festival in 1998 and is renowned internationally for his interpretations of Baroque music.

The manuscripts containing Pachelbel's vocal works are considered a priceless source because most of the compositions in them are uniquely preserved.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Pachelbel's music features complex contrapuntal and concerted styles, natural and cantabile voice leading, and a great art of variation, always inventing new formal ideas and instrumentation.

Composition History

Pachelbel likely composed these pieces for Protestant worship services at the main churches in Nuremberg, St. Sebald and St. Lorenz, where Latin services were still held in the early 18th century.

Performer Biography

The Himlische Cantorey ensemble, featured on this album, takes its name from a 1604 collection of psalm settings by Hamburg church musicians, inspired by the idea of 'heavenly music' (musica caelestis).

Composition History

Four extensive volumes containing 26 of Pachelbel's compositions and one by his son, Carl Theodorus Pachelbel, were discovered in the library of St. Michael's College in Tenbury, England.
