Mahler's Second Symphony, known as the 'Resurrection' Symphony, had a long and difficult creation process, spanning five years due to his demanding role as opera director in Budapest and later as First Kapellmeister in Hamburg.
Composer Biography
Gustav Mahler was extremely sensitive to noise and had a small, austerely furnished composing hut built for himself in secluded locations like Steinbach am Attersee, where he worked from early morning until late afternoon.
Performer Biography
Yutaka Sado, the conductor on this album, is considered one of the most important Japanese conductors of our time and gained enormous fame in Japan through a TV program where he presented classical music.
Composition History
The inspiration for the choral finale of Mahler's Second Symphony came to him like a 'lightning strike' during the funeral mass for Hans von Bülow, a conductor who had previously rejected his first movement.
Recording & Production
This album was recorded live at the Wiener Musikverein in Austria between May 15-22, 2019, and was produced by Florian Rosensteiner for ORF/Radio Österreich 1.

The Tonkünstler Orchestra, conducted by Yutaka Sado on this recording, is one of Austria's biggest musical ambassadors, with residencies in Vienna, St. Pölten, and Grafenegg, and a 70-year tradition of Sunday afternoon concerts at the Wiener Musikverein.
