1/7Cultural Impact
Ingegneri's book of Holy Week Responsories was misattributed to Palestrina for a long time, allowing his music to continue being heard in European churches and cathedrals until the present day.
Composition History
Ingegneri's compositional output shifted significantly after 1586, focusing almost exclusively on sacred music, likely due to the closure of Cremona's principal non-ecclesiastical cultural institution, the Accademia degli Animosi.
Recording & Production
This album is the fourth recording of Marc'Antonio Ingegneri's music by Girton College, Cambridge, and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama for Toccata Classics.
Compositional Technique
Ingegneri's Masses, such as the Missa Susanne un Jour, often employ the parody Mass technique, basing new settings on existing music by masters like Lassus, Rore, and Palestrina as an act of homage and ambition.
Composer Biography
Ingegneri was a prolific and highly regarded teacher, notably of Claudio Monteverdi, who mentioned him in his first five publications.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Ingegneri's liturgical works cover a wide range of styles, from traditional contrapuntal to madrigalian and expressive, and even polychoral textures, all responding to the Church's post-Council of Trent desire for tradition, clarity, and splendour.
Composer Biography
Marc'Antonio Ingegneri (1535/6-92) was a student at the cathedral choir school in Verona, receiving his musical education from Jachet de Berchem, Giovanni Brevio, and possibly Vincenzo Ruffo.
