Mariani, originally from Lucca, was appointed director of the chapel at Savona Cathedral and also pursued interests as a poet and mathematician.

Giovanni Lorenzo Mariani, the composer, moved to Bologna in 1746 to study with Padre Giovanni Battista Martini and was admitted to the Accademia Filarmonica in 1751.
