Bohuslav Martinu, the composer, was a violinist himself and for some years was a member of the Czech Philharmonic.
Composition History
Martinu's Violin Concerto No. 2 was commissioned by Mischa Elman, a famous American violinist of Ukrainian origin, after Elman heard Martinu's Symphony No. 1 in New York.
Historical Context
The rise of nationalist socialist politics in Germany, with its aversion to 'degenerated music,' prevented Schott publishing house from fulfilling an exclusive contract with Martinu.
Performer Biography
Bohuslav Matoušek, the violinist on this recording, studied with Arthur Grumiaux and Nathan Milstein and won first prize at the prestigious Prague Spring International Competition in 1972.
Compositional Technique
In the closing movement of Violin Concerto No. 1, Martinu combines the solo violin with the snare drum in a highly original way, a timbre he returned to years later in other works.
