Composition History
Messiaen's Méditations sur le Mystère de la Sainte Trinité originated from four improvised organ meditations performed in 1967 for a public celebration at Sainte Trinité Church.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Although Messiaen incorporated secular and other religious influences, his primary musical purpose was to express 'spiritual truths of the Catholic faith'.
Compositional Technique
In the Méditations, Messiaen used a self-defined 'Communicable Language' where pitches and durations were assigned to letters, allowing him to spell out quotations from St. Thomas Aquinas.
Composer Biography
Olivier Messiaen, the composer, was appointed Organiste Titulaire of Sainte Trinité Church in Paris in 1930, a position he held for over 40 years.
Compositional Technique
Messiaen frequently incorporated birdsongs, plainchant, and Greek and Indian rhythmic patterns into his mature works, including the Méditations.
Instruments
The organ used for this recording, the Perkins & Wells Memorial Organ (C. B. Fisk • Opus 126), has 44 voices, 57 ranks, and 3,119 pipes.
Performer Biography
Colin Andrews, the organist on this recording, is one of only four organists worldwide to have recorded the complete organ works of Messiaen.
