Composer Biography

Praetorius initially studied theology but took an organist's post in 1586 to support himself after his brother's death, eventually becoming court Kapellmeister for Duke Heinrich Julius in Wolfenbüttel.

Compositional Technique

Praetorius's three-volume music theory compendium, Syntagma musicum (1615-1619), is still frequently quoted today and demonstrates his wide knowledge of Italian music, despite never visiting Italy.

Gli Scarlattisti, the vocal ensemble on this recording, was founded in 1995 by Jochen M. Arnold and consists of professional singers from Germany and Switzerland.
