The album title, "Modern Bridges," reflects the Tetrapod Ensemble's aim to show how contemporary music can be serious, entertaining, and universally understood by building these 'modern bridges'.
Interpretation
The Tetrapod Ensemble, consisting of flutist Nuriia Khasenova, clarinetist Damien Bachmann, cellist Christoph Croisé, and pianist François-Xavier Poizat, focuses almost exclusively on works by living composers.
Composer Biography
Nikolai Kapustin, a composer and pianist born in Ukraine, never considered himself a jazz musician, but rather a creative discoverer of new music based on traditional forms.
Composition History
Svante Henryson's "Off Piste" was commissioned by Swedish Public Television in 1996 for a televised concert, but it took him 22 years to complete the final two parts of the suite.
Performer Biography
Pianist François-Xavier Poizat, who has Swiss, French, and Chinese origins, was invited by Martha Argerich to the Pacific Music Festival in Japan at age 12, launching his international career.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Composer Daniel Schnyder, active in jazz, classical, popular, and world music, intentionally crosses boundaries between these genres, using jazz ensembles as a 'laboratory' to develop his musical writing.
Compositional Technique
Guillaume Connesson's "Techno Parade" uses a continuous beat, swirling motifs, clarinet wails, and obsessive piano patterns to emulate the raw energy of techno music.
