Torroba's career in guitar music began after he caught the attention of Andrés Segovia, a renowned 20th-century guitarist, who needed new repertoire and presented Torroba with a "blank slate."

Federico Moreno Torroba, the composer, initially studied engineering and had a military career, but failed in both due to an aversion to trigonometry.

Instruments

The guitar used in this recording is a Hermann Hauser Senior from 1936, an instrument that Andrés Segovia considered "the best guitar of our epoch."

Compositional Technique

Torroba's Sonatina, despite its modest title, is a full-blown cyclical sonata with a subjacent rhythmic relationship between the themes of its outer movements.

Performer Biography

Franz Halász, the guitarist on this album, won a Latin Grammy Award in 2015 and holds the first-ever professorship of guitar at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Munich.
