José Viana da Mota, a Portuguese composer, went to Berlin at age 14 to study music, supported by Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, King-Consort of Portugal.
Composer Biography
Viana da Mota played for Franz Liszt in Weimar in 1885 and later studied with Liszt's pupil, Hans von Bülow, in Frankfurt.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Viana da Mota's early works aimed to distinguish him within the Germanic Classical-Romantic lineage of composers like Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms, Liszt, and Wagner.

Composer Biography
Viana da Mota studied piano with Xaver Scharwenka and theory and composition with Philipp Scharwenka at the conservatory in Berlin.
