Historical Context
Much of the music for basset horn trio, known as Harmoniemusik, was composed for entertainment and served as the "radio or CD player of the 18th century."
Interpretation
To prepare the historical instruments for recording, they were treated with almond oil over a year, and final rehearsals were done on the original instruments after initial preparation on copies.
Instruments
The three Lotz basset horns used in this recording were reunited for the first time in 200 years, having been originally made as a set.

The basset horns used in this recording were built by T. Lotz in Vienna around 1790, and the clarinet by A. Grenser in Dresden around 1785.

This album was recorded in June 1998 at the Castle/Museum of Krásna Hôrka, Slovakia.
Cultural Impact
Martín i Soler's opera Una cosa rara was a "hit" in the late 18th century, and Mozart even quoted one of its arias, "O quanto un sì bel giubilo," in his opera Don Giovanni.
Historical Context
The instruments were commissioned by Count Georg Andrassy, a wealthy nobleman and mason living in Krásna Hôrka, whose name appears on their cases.
