1/7Composer's Artistic Vision
Johannes Brahms, a composer whose work was a lodestar for Klemperer, studied Renaissance and Baroque choral music to master the articulation of harmony and order out of dissonance.
Composition History
Brahms's 'Ein deutsches Requiem' is his largest single composition and a pivotal work in his creative life, conceived as a secular meditation on sacred texts rather than a traditional Catholic requiem Mass.
Recording & Production
The BBC Chorus, led by Leslie Woodgate (1900-1961), whose work was admired even by Arturo Toscanini, performed in Klemperer's 1955 London performance of 'Ein deutsches Requiem'.
Performer Biography
Klemperer suffered from manic-depressive episodes, exacerbated by a brain tumor removal in 1939 that left him partly paralyzed and prone to sudden disappearances, spending sprees, and sexual adventures.
Performer Biography
Otto Klemperer, the conductor, was a towering figure at 6'6" and had an epic life marked by cultural displacement, religious upheaval, and numerous health crises.
Recording & Production
This album features three live performances conducted by Otto Klemperer, recorded by the BBC in London and Edinburgh between 1955 and 1958.
Interpretation
Klemperer's deep attachment to Brahms's musical heritage and the idea of a 'human requiem' made him a matchless exponent of 'Ein deutsches Requiem'.
