1/6Composition History
Mozart composed his Clarinet Concerto in A, K. 622, just a few weeks before his death in the autumn of 1791.
Compositional Technique
Mozart originally conceived the Clarinet Concerto for Anton Stadler's lower-pitched basset clarinet, but this recording uses the later version for a 'normal' clarinet.
Performer Biography
This album celebrates the birthdays of father and son, Sir Neville Marriner, who turned 80, and Andrew Marriner, who turned 50 in 2004.
Recording & Production
Polyhymnia International, the recording facility, was founded in 1998 as a management buy-out by key personnel of the former Philips Classics Recording Center.
Composer's Artistic Vision
In the Clarinet Quintet, Mozart rejected virtuosity for its own sake, instead aiming for a tonal balance and thematic equality among all five instruments.
Recording & Production
Most of Polyhymnia's recording equipment, including microphone preamplifiers and internal microphone electronics, is custom-built or substantially modified in-house.
