Flutist Henrik Wiese, who was self-taught initially, was appointed solo flutist of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich at the age of 23 after just five terms of study.

Mozart's Piano Concerto in B flat major, KV 456, was written for the blind pianist Maria Theresia Paradis, which is why it has a fully written-out piano part and cadenzas.

Johann Nepomuk Hummel, who arranged the works on this album, lived in Mozart's house as a boy from late 1785 until September 1787 and received free tuition from him.

Recording & Production

This album is the third release in Fumiko Shiraga's complete recording of Hummel's chamber arrangements of seven of Mozart's piano concertos.

Interpretation

Hummel's metronome markings for the Symphony in G minor, KV 550, suggest surprisingly fast tempos, similar to Beethoven's, reflecting Viennese taste of the time.
