This album is part of a larger cycle of Mozart piano concertos, which was initially commissioned by Decca in the early 1990s but was put on hiatus in 2000.

The album cover features artwork by Paul Klee, an artist fascinated by music, continuing a tradition from the first four volumes of this cycle which were also adorned with his works.

Recording & Production

The completion of this Mozart piano concerto cycle was made possible during the COVID-19 pandemic, as lockdowns offered artists and managers an opportunity to resume the project.

Instruments

The fortepianos used in this recording are copies of 1786 Stein pianos, made by Chris Maene in 2016 and 2021, each possessing a distinctive sound.

Compositional Technique

Mozart's concertos for multiple soloists, such as those on this album, feature two distinct ways of deploying the instruments: antiphonally (one answers the other) and in tandem (both play together).
