Joseph Haydn, to whom the quartets are dedicated, praised Mozart to his father Leopold, saying, "your son is the greatest composer I know in person or by name: he not only has good taste but the greatest compositional knowledge as well."

Mozart spent an unusually long three years completing his "Haydn" Quartets, calling them the "fruits of long and arduous work," and his manuscripts show many corrections and fresh starts.
Critical Reception
Many of Mozart's contemporaries found his "Haydn" Quartets difficult, describing the music as "overseasoned," "difficult and unusual," and "bizarre" due to its bold harmonies.
