The bassoon, which developed from its Renaissance ancestor the dulcian, achieved a permanent place in the continuo group by 1700.
Instruments
Antonio Vivaldi recognized the bassoon's versatility early on, composing no fewer than 39 concertos for it, and Georg Philipp Telemann also featured it as a soloist.

Jaakko Luoma has served as solo bassoonist for the Orchestre de Paris (1996-98) and the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin (2001-2003).

By 1750, the bassoon's tone was smooth and mellow, with a softer upper register, a solid middle, and a sonorous bass, capable of descending to a low B-flat.

This recording was made at the Tapiola Concert Hall in Finland from August 14-18, 2017, and was produced with support from the Finnish Cultural Foundation and Finnish Music Foundation (MES).
