Samuel Hasselhorn, the baritone on this album, studied opera singing at the Hanover Academy of Music and Theatre and spent a year at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse in Paris.

Takako Miyazaki, the pianist on this album, studied piano at the Tokyo College of Music and the Hanover Academy of Music and Theatre, also completing a master's degree in fortepiano.

Compositional Technique

In Schubert's 'Erlkönig,' the piano part uses pounding triplet octaves to evoke a wild ride, and vividly characterizes the dramatic figures of the son, father, and Erlking.

Composition History

Schubert's 'Erlkönig,' a setting of Goethe's famous ballad, was composed when Schubert was eighteen in 1815, a year in which he wrote over 150 songs.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Despite differences in musical language, the songs on this album by Schubert, Pfitzner, and Reimann are linked by their shared Romantic themes, such as loneliness, nature, and longing, derived from poems by Heine, Eichendorff, and their contemporaries.
