Nápravník was a prolific correspondent, exchanging over 12,000 letters with more than 500 prominent personalities of his day, including Pyotr and Modest Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Mahler, and Saint-Saëns.

Nápravník's career at the Mariinsky Theatre began accidentally in 1863 when he sight-read a piano part for an opera after the scheduled pianist failed to appear.
