The 'New Goldberg Variations' project was conceived by Robert Goldberg and his wife Judith N. Goldberg to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary, with the original Goldberg Variations having been played at their wedding.

David Geringas compiled the sequence of works on this album as a suite, reducing pauses between tracks to create a seamless flow, and integrated Ferruccio Busoni's Aria because it 'sounds like a variation'.
