Both concertos on this album are world-premiere recordings, featuring the Vancouver Contemporary Orchestra conducted by Clyde Mitchell.
Instruments
The Wagner tuba, featured in one of the concertos, was envisioned by Richard Wagner to bridge the timbral gap between horns, trombones, and tubas, offering more warmth in the lower range.
Composition History
The Concerto for Piccolo was commissioned by Sarah Jackson, the soloist, and conductor Clyde Mitchell, who leads the Vancouver-based Lions Gate Sinfonia.
Composer's Artistic Vision
For his Piccolo Concerto, Christopher Tyler Nickel aimed to create a serious work that gives the instrument gravitas and challenges the soloist, avoiding a "gimmicky" sound.

Sarah Jackson, the piccolo soloist, has been the Piccolo for the Los Angeles Philharmonic since 2003 and previously held positions with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

Christopher Tyler Nickel has composed music for hundreds of hours of film and television productions, including scores for Discovery, National Geographic, and Hallmark.
