Carl Nielsen became a violinist in the Royal Danish Orchestra in 1889, where the principal conductor, Johan Svendsen, supported his compositional talent.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Nielsen's Second Symphony, 'The Four Temperaments', was inspired by a colored picture he saw in a Zealand country inn.
Compositional Technique
The second movement of Nielsen's Symphony No. 3, 'Sinfonia Espansiva', originally had vocal parts with the text 'All thoughts vanished. I lie beneath the sky,' which were later omitted.
