1/7Composer Biography
Orlande de Lassus, the composer, was born in 1532, the same year Rabelais published Pantagruel.
Compositional Technique
Lassus's motet cycle on the Sibyls is known for its chromaticism and a declamatory style that adapts the tonic stress of verses to musical declamation, resulting in a largely homophonic style.
Recording & Production
This album was recorded in March 2005 at Baixàs Church in France.
Composition History
A portrait of Lassus at age twenty-eight in the manuscript helps date it to 1558 or 1560.
Composer's Artistic Vision
A little-known tradition makes Job the patron of musicians, linking the two works on this album as the Sibyls also transmit their message vocally, and thus musically.
Composition History
The manuscript was decorated with miniatures of the twelve Sibyls by Hans Mielich, who, like Lassus, served Duke Albrecht V of Bavaria, the manuscript's recipient.
Composition History
The manuscript containing Lassus's Prophetiæ Sibyllarum and Lectiones Sacræ Novem ex libris Hiob was copied in Lassus's own hand.
