Paavo Järvi, the conductor, studied at the Curtis Institute of Music and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute with Leonard Bernstein.

Conductor Paavo Järvi chose to perform orchestral selections from Wagner's 'Der Ring des Nibelungen' as a symphonic suite, similar to Grieg's 'Peer Gynt' or Prokofiev's 'Romeo and Juliet' suites.

Interpretation

Paavo Järvi used orchestral arrangements by Wagner's contemporaries for this recording, which are slightly smaller than the original opera scoring but retain all of Wagner's original intentions.

The NHK Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo, began as the New Symphony Orchestra in 1926 and became the NHK Symphony Orchestra in 1951 when it received financial support from Nippon Hoso Kyokai (Japan Broadcasting Corporation).
