Oskar Fried, the conductor on this album, began his career as a circus clown, stable boy, and dog trainer before becoming a horn player.

Oskar Fried, a staunch Socialist and Jew, chose to move to the USSR in 1934 when life in Nazi Germany became impossible, becoming chief conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra of the USSR in Moscow.

This album features recordings re-mastered from original 78-rpm shellac records, restored by Holger Sieder from Volker Hartung's record collection.

Performer Biography

Oskar Fried's first composition, 'Transfigured Night' for mezzosoprano, tenor and Orchestra, was inspired by the same Richard Dehmel poem that also inspired Arnold Schoenberg's string sextet of the same name.

Recording & Production

Oskar Fried was one of the first conductors to have a permanent recording contract, and he made the first recordings of Richard Strauss's 'Alpine Symphony' and Bruckner's 7th Symphony.

Performer Biography

Oskar Fried had the unique opportunity to study all of Gustav Mahler's symphonies directly with the composer himself, who then entrusted Fried with the Berlin premieres of his 6th and 8th symphonies.
