After fleeing Messina, Pandolfi Mealli served as a violinist in the royal court chapel in Madrid from 1679, where he was highly esteemed.

Giovanni Antonio Pandolfi Mealli, the composer, was baptized in Montepulciano, Tuscany, in 1629, a place already famous for its red wine production.

Compositional Technique
Pandolfi Mealli's violin music is characterized by incredible formal freedom, experimenting with short, contrasting passages and effective, improvisatory sequences over long pedal notes.
Composition History
Pandolfi Mealli dedicated almost all of his Sonatas to his colleagues in music chapels, naming each work after one of them.
Interpretation
The performers chose a large continuo ensemble for this recording, influenced by the operatic practice of using varied instrumental timbres to express emotions.

Pandolfi Mealli was a violinist at the cathedral of Messina but had to flee in 1675 after a dispute with a castrato led to a priest stabbing the castrato.
