Album & Artwork
The album's title, 'Paradisi Porte Hans Memling's Angelic Concert', refers to Hans Memling's painting 'God the Father with Singing and Music Making Angels', which is featured on the cover.
Composition History
The magnificent representation of the heavenly concert in Memling's painting was commissioned by the Abbey Santa María la Real of Nájera in Spain around 1490.
Instruments
The instruments reconstructed for this project include five stringed instruments, an organetto (portative organ), various trumpets, and a shawm.
Composer's Artistic Vision
The program of this recording centers around the ascension of Jesus Christ and the assumption of the Virgin Mary, reflecting the main theme of the Retablo Major painting.
Instruments
A multidisciplinary project was initiated to reconstruct the various musical instruments depicted in Memling's painting for this recording.
Interpretation
The performers opted to use 'Pythagorean tuning' for this music, which is based on stacking pure fifths, a common interval in the repertoire.
