Composition History

John McCabe's setting of "Woefully arrayed" was commissioned by the Three Choirs Festival for Stile Antico and premiered at the festival in 2009.

By the end of the 15th century, English music had developed a distinct voice, largely due to geographical isolation and the political and religious upheavals of 16th-century England.

John McCabe chose to adapt the modernized words of "Woefully arrayed" while incorporating some archaisms to preserve rhythm and verbal sound.

Stile Antico, the performing ensemble, has received two Grammy nominations and won the 2009 Gramophone Award for Early Music for their album "Song of Songs."
