Composition History

Goffredo Petrassi's Seventh Concerto for Orchestra began as Prologo e Cinque Invenzioni for the Portland Junior Symphony, which the composer initially judged a disaster before rewriting it.

Composer Biography

From 1937 to 1940, Goffredo Petrassi was superintendent of Teatro La Fenice in Venice, where he organized the Biennale, an international festival for contemporary music.

Composition History

The Eighth Concerto for Orchestra by Goffredo Petrassi was a response to a commission from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, demanding a piece of outright virtuosity.

Composer Biography

Petrassi held prestigious teaching posts, including professor of composition at the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia from 1940 to 1960, and head of its masterclass in composition from 1960 to 1978.

Performer Biography

The Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma, established in 2002, was a rare example in Europe of an orchestra completely privately funded by the Rome Foundation.

Critical Reception

Goffredo Petrassi's reputation was established in 1932 when his work Partita won the Contemporary Music Award and was selected for international festivals.
