Composer Biography

Gabriel Pierné, the composer, was a brilliant student at the Paris Conservatoire, winning first prizes in piano, harmony, and organ, and the Grand Prix de Rome for his cantata Édith.

In Izeÿl, Pierné used authentic Indian modes and a colorful orchestration featuring harps, celesta, and solo wind instruments to evoke a delicate orientalism.

Bramwell Tovey, the conductor, was appointed chief conductor and musical director of the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg in 2002 after twice stepping in for indisposed conductors.
