Composer Biography
Henry Purcell, known as the 'British Orpheus', died suddenly at the age of 36 in 1695, leaving behind a vast number of works from only two decades of activity.
Composition History
Purcell's harpsichord suites were published a year after his death in 1696, thanks to his widow Frances, and were the first collection of works for harpsichord published in the British Isles.
Compositional Technique
Purcell's harpsichord suites are succinct, typically featuring an almand and corant as their core, and often begin with a prelude that suggests improvisation.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Purcell's harpsichord style was influenced by English virginalists like William Byrd and French harpsichord masters, as well as lute music from figures like John Dowland.
