Compositional Technique

In 'Desiderium animæ', Putignano uses procedures from Byzantine chant, such as terirèm, isokràtima, phtora, and ìsson, to create a 'ghost theme' that shifts timbrally.

Composition History

'Carteggio spirituale' was composed in 2017 for the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation and is dedicated to the album's interpreter, Pier Damiano Peretti.

Performer Biography

Pier Damiano Peretti, the organist on this album, won the prestigious International Competition in St. Albans (GB) in 1999, being the only Italian to do so at that time.

Instruments

The album features the Mathis Organ (1995) from the Schottenkirche in Vienna and an anonymous 18th-century Neapolitan Positive organ, restored in 2017/18, from St. Ursula Kirche, Vienna.
