The esteemed French ensemble Trio Wanderer present Rachmaninoff’s two early Elegiac Trios for violin, cello and piano: youthful works written under the influence of Tchaikovsky yet still distinctive and richly expressive. The first is a single-movement work in G minor, while the D minor second is cast in three substantial movements. Works by Edvard Grieg and Josef Suk complete the album.

Rachmaninoff's chamber music output is relatively small, consisting of two piano trios, a cello sonata, some minor pieces, and two unfinished string quartets.

Rachmaninoff's Piano Trio No. 2 was inspired by Tchaikovsky's trio, which was dedicated to the memory of Nikolai Rubinstein, founder of the Moscow Conservatory.
