Reinecke composed his Piano Concerto No. 1 in F sharp minor in 1860, shortly after his appointment as director of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra.

Reinecke wrote his Piano Concerto No. 1 quickly and with great concentration to provide distraction during a lonely time in Leipzig, while his children were with their grandparents.
