The idea for this album came to cellist Jeremy Findlay in early 2011 when composer Jiří Gemrot began writing his variations on a theme by Dvořák.

Bohuslav Martinů, a prolific composer for the cello, wrote his Variations on a Slovak Folk Song in 1959, his last year of life, in Switzerland.

Bohuslav Martinů's Variations on a Theme of Rossini were written in 1942 in New York and dedicated to cellist Gregor Piatigorsky, becoming part of the mainstream cello repertoire.
