Compositional Technique

One piece, "Marche et réminiscences pour mon dernier voyage," frames brief excerpts from several of Rossini's operas within a funeral march, including "Di tanti palpiti" from Tancredi and a fragment from Il barbiere di Siviglia.

Gioachino Rossini, a highly successful operatic composer, had parents who were both musicians: his father was a brass-player and his mother a singer.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Rossini grouped volumes four to eight of his Péchés de vieillesse as 'Un peu de tout' (A little of everything), dedicating them to 'pianists of the fourth class, to which I have the honour to belong,' despite his considerable piano abilities.
