Composition History

The Cello Concerto, Op. 32, was commissioned by Hungarian-American cellist János Starker, who asked Rózsa to write it after hearing him perform another concerto.

Rózsa's father wanted him to be a chemist, but Rózsa spent most of his time in the music department at Leipzig Conservatory, eventually pursuing music with his grandfather's permission.
