Edmund Rubbra, the composer, was considered a 'late developer' and only began to feel confident writing large-scale forms in his early thirties.

This album was recorded in Potton Hall, Westleton, Suffolk, UK, from January 13th to 15th, 2009.

Rubbra regarded the string quartet as 'the purest and most lucid texture available to a composer', and each of his four quartets represented a musical 'summing up' of a compositional period.

The cover art for this recording features a portrait of Antoinette, Rubbra's second wife, as a teenager, painted by her sister Elizabeth Chaplin.
Compositional Technique
Rubbra's Piano Trio No. 1, though in one movement, is divided into three distinct sections, with the last being a set of variations or 'meditations' as he preferred to call them.
