The M. Nostitz Quartet was founded in 1994 by students of the Academy of Music in Prague and performs with the permission of Countess Mathilda Nostitz, whose family has been arts patrons since the 18th century.

Out of 72 quartets once listed by Ryba, only the four on this album (two for flute and two for string quartet) have survived.

Jakub Jan Ryba, the composer, was the son of a cantor and schoolmaster, and followed his father's profession, which was important for fostering music in Bohemia.
Performer Biography
Jan Ostry, the flautist on this album, has won several prizes including the Concertino Praga and the Prague F.X. Dussek Competition, and has taught at the European Flute Academy.

Ryba studied piano, organ, violin, and cello, and was also a pupil at the Piarist Gymnasium in Prague from 1781 to 1785.
