Sabaneev enjoyed a classical education, studying physics, mathematics, natural history, history, and philology, and also studied composition with Taneev, piano with Schloezer and Zverev, and orchestration with Rimsky-Korsakov.

This CD completes Michael Schäfer's world premiere recording of Sabaneev's complete piano works.

Sabaneev's musical style evolved from smaller forms to larger ensemble works, with a gradual increase in complexity and an expansion of harmonic language, including the use of polytonality and cluster harmonies in later works.

This recording includes a previously unpublished and recently discovered Passacaglia & Fuga, which is considered one of Sabaneev's most important works.

The pianist Michael Schäfer states that the Bösendorfer Imperial grand piano is the only one in the world on which Sabaneev's works could be faithfully played.
